The Shepherd Who Stays
I. He provides before we ask (v.1–2)
"I shall not want" is not a promise of having everything — it's the confidence of belonging to Someone who knows what we need.
Cross-references: Matthew 6:31–33 · Philippians 4:19
II. He restores when we wander (v.3)
Sheep drift. The Shepherd doesn't wait for them to find their way back — He goes and brings them.
Cross-references: Luke 15:4–7 · Isaiah 53:6
III. He remains in the darkest valley (v.4)
Notice the shift from "He" to "You." In the valley, David stops talking about God and starts talking to Him.
Cross-references: Isaiah 43:2 · Hebrews 13:5
IV. He welcomes us to a table and a home (v.5–6)
The journey doesn't end in the valley. It ends at a table — and in the house of the Lord forever.
Cross-references: John 14:2–3 · Revelation 21:3–4
Illustration prompt
A shepherd in the Middle East often slept across the entrance to the sheepfold — his own body was the door. Connect to John 10:11.
Application
Which valley are you walking through right now? Name it — and remember you are not walking it alone.
Closing appeal
Invite the congregation to pray Psalm 23 aloud together, changing "the Lord" to "my Lord."
